Armenian president voices support for Syria

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan says Syria will definitely emerge victorious from the fight against terrorism and foreign-sponsored militancy, and restore its security and stability.

“Armenia supports Syria against terrorism in all its forms. It also backs the Syrian people and state during the ordeal, which it is going through,” Sargsyan said in a meeting with visiting Syrian Parliament Speaker Mohammed Jihad al-Laham in Yerevan on Wednesday, Syria’s official SANA news agency reported.

The Armenian president also described the relations between Yerevan and Damascus as “deep and strong,” calling for the further enhancement of bilateral relations between the two countries.

Laham, for his part, expressed gratitude for Armenia’s stance vis-à-vis terrorism as well as the political and economic pressures that Syria is enduring.

He also called upon the international community to recognize the rights of world nations, and respect them.

Syria has been grappling with a deadly crisis since March 2011. The violence fueled by Takfiri groups has so far claimed the lives of over 222,000 people, according to the so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

More than 67,000 of the dead were civilians, including over 11,000 children.

Over 3.8 million Syrians have left their country since the beginning of the crisis. More than 7.2 million Syrians have also become internally displaced, according to the United Nations.
