Azerbaijan court sentences 9 people for joining ISIS in Syria

An Azerbaijan court has reportedly sentenced nine people to prison terms of upto 15 years on charges of joining ISIS in Syria.

The convicts were arrested in September by Azerbaijani authorities.

Azerbaijan’s security ministry had then said that it had arrested 26 people for ‘fighting alongside IS jihadists’.

Vugar Dursunaliyev, one of the convicts, reportedly had instructed his 15-year-old son to join ISIS in Syria. The father has been sentenced to 15 years in prison, while his son who returned to Azerbaijan a few months after staying in Syria has been given a four-year sentence.

Azerbaijan has close ties with Washington and reportedly contributed troops to the US-led missions in Afghanistan and Iraq.
