US envoy in Turkey following speculation of Syria intervention

The US special envoy for the coalition against Daesh was in Ankara Tuesday to meet with Turkish officials following speculation Turkey was considering a military intervention inside Syria, AFP reported.

“General John Allen will hold talks in Ankara today,” a Turkish official told AFP, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

Allen is expected to meet with Feridun Sinirlioglu, the Turkish undersecretary of the foreign ministry as well as military chiefs, the source said. The talks were expected to focus on the fight against Daesh.

Over the past week, Turkey has reinforced its positions along the border, deploying tanks and anti-aircraft missiles alongside additional troops, fueling speculation that the government is planning to intervene in Syria.

Reports have emerged that the Turkish military was considering a buffer zone inside Syrian territory to ensure Turkish security and house some of the 1.8 million refugees on its territory.

Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu Friday denied the reports, stating that Turkey had ruled out any prospect of immediate intervention in Syria, but that it would respond if its security was threatened, AFP reported.
