US returns antiquities recovered from Daesh to Iraq

The United States on Wednesday returned antiquities recovered from Daesh to Iraq, Reuters reports.

US military officials say the bounty is proof that Daesh is using the smuggling of ancient relics to fund their war.

According to the Reuters report, the relics included ancient cylindrical stamps, pottery, metallic bracelets and other jewellery, Islamic coins, and glass shards from what appeared to be a coloured vase.

US special forces recovered the antiquities in May during an operation in Syria against a high-ranking Daesh commander, Abu Sayyef.
