Syria’s Air Force Carries Out More Than 5,000 Airstrikes in Three Months: SOHR
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), 5012 airstrikes were carried out by Syria’s air force across the country since October 20, 2014 until January 20, 2015 that killed more than a thousand people.
Meanwhile, a car bomb in government-controlled city of Homs on Wednesday killed seven and wounded more than 30.
According to the British-based SOHR, warplanes carried out 2,580 and helicopters 2,432 airstrikes in Aleppo, Idlib, Reef Dimashq, al-Quneitra, Homs, Hama, Lattakia, al-Hasakah, and Damascus.
On Wednesday, in the latest of such air strikes, at least 43 civilians were killed and 150 wounded in an air raid by the Syrian military targeting the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in the northeast area of Tal Hamis.
The pro-government newspaper al-Watan said dozens of ISIS members were killed in the operation south of Tal Hamis that struck a cattle market.
The fighters “have been using the cattle market as a base for trafficking illegally pumped oil,” the government paper said.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights in report on casualties of the last three months airstrikes by the Syrian air force put the number at 1,057. At least 4,000 civilians were wounded, said the observatory.
Car Bomb in Homs
Meanwhile on Wednesday, a car bomb on a shopping street in Syria’s government-controlled city of Homs killed seven people and wounded 30, the provincial governor announced in a statement to the press.
It was the latest in a string of deadly attacks targeting the Akrameh neighborhood of the central city. The Akrameh has been hit by multiple attacks, including continuous mortar fire.
“This is a cowardly terrorist act,” Governor Talal Barazi said after the attack.
In October, a twin car bomb attack outside a school in the district killed 54 people, including 47 children, sparking outrage in the city.
More than 200,000 people have been killed and one million wounded in Syria’s conflict, which began in March 2011 with protests against President Bashar al-Assad and spiraled into an all-out war.
ISIS, al-Nusra Front, other Islamist brigades, and rebels fighting under the umbrella of the Western-backed Free Syrian Army have taken part in the Syrian war, clashing across the country against the Syrian army and militias supporting the Assad regime.
