ISIS Attacks Syrian Army In Southern Deir Ezzor Few Hours After U.S. Airstrike

Just a few hours after a U.S. airstrike on Syrian Arab Army (SAA) positions in southern Deir Ezzor, ISIS fighters launched a major attack in the very same area.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said that a group of the besieged ISIS fighters on the eastern bank of the Euphrates River crossed to the other side and launched an attack on several positions of the SAA and its allies. In the same time, another group of terrorists attacked the army from the direction of the Homs desert. Both attacks were reportedly repelled.

“11 fighters of the group [ISIS] were killed, including three suicide bombers who blew themselves up,” the SOHR said in a report on February 3.

According to the UK-based monitoring group, ISIS fighters were trying to open a route in order to escape from their besieged positions in the middle Euphrates River Valley to the terrorist group’s pocket in the Homs desert. However, the attempt failed.

The US-led coalition hit an artillery position of the SAA in the area injuring two service members several hours before the terrorist group’s attack. The timing of the coalition airstrike suggests that it may have triggered the attack.
