Nearly 210,060 People Killed In Syria Civil War: Rights Group

About 210,060 people have been killed in the civil war in Syria that has been going on for nearly four years, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Saturday.

Among the 100,973 civilians killed, 10,664 were children and 6,783 women, the U.K.-based rights group said on its official website.

The number of rebel and Islamic fighters killed in the conflict since March 2011 was 35,827. The death toll also includes 2,498 defected soldiers and officers.

Further, 45,385 Syrian army soldiers and officers also lost their lives in the civil war.

The SOHR said the actual fighter death toll, including both sides, is likely to be higher, by about 85,000.

According to the group, it was hard to compile an exact death toll figure due to the extreme discretion by groups on both sides regarding their human casualties as well as the difficulty of communication in Syria.

More than 1.5 million Syrian civilians were seriously wounded in the conflict, the SOHR said.

The Syrian Civil War began early 2011 amid the Arab Spring uprisings in the Middle East. What initially began as peaceful protests against President Bashar al-Assad’s government soon worsened to a violent revolt after government forces responded with armed crackdowns.

The Assad family has been in power in Syria for more than four decades.
