White House confirms US hostage’s death, sends condolences

The White House has also confirmed the death of humanitarian aid worker Kayla Mueller, who was being held hostage by Daesh, reports Reuters.

“Over the weekend, the family received a private message from Kayla’s ISIL captors containing additional information,” spokeswoman Bernadette Meehan said, using an acronym for Daesh.

“Once this information was authenticated by the intelligence community, they concluded that Kayla was deceased.”

Reuters is also reporting US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel sent his condolences to the family.

“The world is united in condemning ISIL’s continued murder and imprisonment of innocents,” Hagel said, using an acronym for Daesh.

“As we join Kayla’s family and loved ones in their grief, we also celebrate her selfless dedication to helping others. Her compassionate spirit will never be forgotten.”
