Spain breaks up online network recruiting women for Daesh

Spain dissolved an online network meant to recruit young women to join Daesh and arrested four suspects, officials told AFP on Tuesday.

European countries have been cracking down on Daesh recruiting efforts as a wave of foreign jihadi supporters have been leaving for the fight in Syria.

Spain arrested the two suspects in Melilla, a Spanish enclave near Morocco, for creating several Internet platforms that spread propaganda for Daesh, AFP reported. The other two were arrested in Girona and Barcelona. One detainee maintained a “virtual community” for Daesh that had over 1,000 supporters.

“In line with the strategy of the Daesh terrorist group, they focused on the recruitment of women who, after a process of indoctrination, would end up joining the terrorist group in conflict zones,” the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

Britain estimated earlier about 500 of its citizens had traveled to Syria to join Daesh. France said 1,400 residents had tried to join; on Monday the country had seized six French passports when the travelers were suspected of having allegiance to Daesh.
