In a week of flare up in Idlib .. about 3500 air and ground strikes kill 78 persons including 30 children and women .. 41000 people displace .. regime forces advance snatching 44 areas from the factions grip in Maarrat Al-Nu’man and 259 casualties documented in ranks of both sides

Syrian regime continues their violent military operations on Idlib province with full Russian support. These operations have witnessed noticeable escalation since Tuesday through thousands of air and ground strikes, followed by a ground attack started by regime forces on Thursday, December 19, on the towns and villages of Maarrat Al-Nu’man.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitored the rapid developments of aerial and ground bombardment, displacement, killing and destruction, witnessed in the area since the 17th of December until today morning.

The military operations were mainly concentrated in Saraqib and Maarrat Al-Nu’man area and its countryside. In this period, Russian warplanes targeted the area with at least 287 air strikes, helicopters dropped 313 barrel bombs at least, and regime warplanes carried out more than 309 air strikes. Meanwhile, regime ground forces fired more than 2550 shells and missiles.

These air and ground strikes resulted in killing 78 persons including 17 females and 13 children. 35 casualties of them, including seven children and four females, have been killed by Russian warplanes, the rest were victims of regime warplanes and ground forces.

The bombardment has left 255 injuries some of whom have seriously wounded and others sustained permanent disabilities.

During the same period, SOHR also documented the displacement of 41000 people at least form their cities, towns and villages due to the violent escalation on the area. Accordingly it rose to 100000, the number of people forced to displace since early December, from the eastern countryside of Maarrat Al-Nu’man (the villages from Um Jalal to Maasaran and from Maarrat Al-Nu’man to the vicinity of Abu Al-Duhur), in addition to towns and villages in Jabal Al-Zawiya south of Idlib city, and villages in the east of Saraqib town in the eastern sector of Idlib countryside.

On Thursday the 19th of December, the regime forces launched their ground attacks on Maarrat Al-Nu’man countryside under a cover of mega aerial and ground firepower. Through these attacks, they took control of 44 areas, they are: Um Jalal, Um Al-Twaina, Al-Khariba, Al-Rabia, Al-Sharaa, Bernan, Sahal, Al-Farajeh, Abu Habeh, Al-Rafeh, Al-Serj, Haran, Al-Sayyadi, Tal al-Damm, Katra, Tal Al Shiekh, al-Brisa, Mazra’aat Al-Ali, Al-Burj, al-Haraki, Al-Minzar, Tahtaya, Al-Halbeh, al-Qarati, Karsatna, Al-M’eisruneh, Sakiya, Al-Tah, Al-Sarman, Abu Makki, Marata, Faalul, Al Haditha, Abu Dafnah, Taqana, and Jarjanaz, al-Metrawa, Kherbet al-Srouni, al-Bestan, al-Ma’asara, Kherbet Arnaba, Msibteh, Abu Sharji and Balqah , in addition to small farms.

The Syrian Observatory documented since the beginning of the ground offensive 259 casualties of both parties, they are: 111 of the regime forces and the militiamen loyal to them, and 148 fighters including 28 of the factions and the rest are of the Jihadis.

With the fall of more casualties, it rose to at least 1194, the number of people who were killed since the last agreement of “Putin – Erdogan” on the 31st of August 2019, the date of start of the most violent escalation in terms of aerial and ground bombardment, shelling, and targeting since Putin – Erdogan agreement, until the 24th of December 2019, and they are: 307 civilians including 81 children and 61 citizen women, and they are 138 including 42 children and 23 women were killed in Russian aerial bombardment on the countryside of Idlib and Hama, and 19 including 3 women and 6 children were killed in the fall of barrel bombs, and 59 including 7 children 13 women were killed in targeting by regime’s warplanes, also 77 people including 20 women and 21 children were killed in a ground shelling carried out by the regime forces, and 14 citizens including 5 children and 2 women were killed in shelling by the factions on regime forces’-controlled areas in Aleppo and its countryside and the countryside of Hama, while at least 441 fighters were killed in the Russian airstrikes and the regime’s aerial and ground shelling including 314 of the Jihadis, in addition to killing of 446 members of the regime forces in targeting and shelling by jihadi groups and factions.

It rose to at least 5295, the number of people who were killed since the 30th of April 2019, the date of start of the most violent escalation in terms of aerial and ground bombardment, shelling, and targeting since Putin – Erdogan agreement, until the 24th of December 2019, and they are: 1352 civilians including 341 children and 247 citizen women, and they are 364 including 86 children and 66 women, and 9 of the civil defense and 6 of the ambulance team were killed in Russian aerial bombardment on the countryside of Idlib and Hama, and 107 including 22 women and 21 children were killed in the fall of barrel bombs, and 596 including 162 children, 100 women, and 5 members of the rescue teams were killed in targeting by regime’s warplanes, also 191 people including 40 women and 41 children were killed in a ground shelling carried out by the regime forces, and 94 citizens including 31 children and 16 women were killed in shelling by the factions on al-Suqaylabiyah, Qamhana, Al-Rasif, Al-Aziziyah, Karnaz, Jurin, Al-Nairab Camp, neighborhoods in Aleppo city and its southern countryside, while at least 2106 fighters were killed in the Russian airstrikes and the regime’s aerial and ground shelling including 1401 of the Jihadis, in addition to killing of 1837 members of the regime forces in targeting and shelling by jihadi groups and factions.

During the period between the 15th of February 2019; the date of the meeting of “Rouhani – Erdogan – Putin” until today; the Syrian Observatory documented the death of 5813 people in the Russian – Turkish truce areas, they are 1627 civilians including 417 children under the age of eighteen and 310 women over the age of eighteen, they were killed in the Russian aerial bombardment and the rocket shelling by the regime forces and the factions, and among the death toll of civilians there are 120 people including 34 children under the age of eighteen and 20 citizen women over the age of eighteen, they were killed in the fall of shells launched by the factions, and 2192 fighters were killed in different conditions within the demilitarized area since Putin – Erdogan agreement, including 1433 fighters of the “Jihadis” and 1994 of the regime forces and militiamen loyal to them.

While the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights documented since the start of the Russian – Turkish truce the death of 6047 people in areas of Erdogan – Putin agreement, they are: 1710 civilians including 446 children and 324 women, were killed in shelling by the regime forces and the militiamen loyal to them, targeting, and bombardment by warplanes, and among them there are 121 people including 34 children and 21 women, were killed in the fall of shells launched by the factions, and 2259 fighters were killed in deferent circumstances within the demilitarized area since Putin – Erdogan agreement, including 1537 of the “Jihadi” fighters, and 2078 members of the regime forces and militiamen loyal to them.
