Blasts, airstrikes kill scores in Syria, including near schools

(CNN) — A car bomb exploded near an elementary school in western Syria on Sunday, killing seven people, state media reported.

The fatalities included five students, the Syrian Arab News Agency said. The blast occurred at a town in Homs province.

The opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also reported the explosion. It said five people were killed.

In a separate attack, at least 30 people were killed in airstrikes on rebel controlled neighborhoods in Aleppo, the opposition Local Coordination Committees said in statement.

It said barrel bombs were dropped on a number of neighborhoods in the city.

Opposition activists also reported airstrikes on Aleppo suburbs Sunday that killed three people and wounded 40 others. They hit two schools and a residential neighborhood in Maraa, the Aleppo Media Center said.

It said many of the wounded were students.
