Islamic State Captures Female Canadian Fighter After Kobani Loss
Extremists from the group Islamic State of Iraq in the Levant (ISIL) reportedly captured a female Canadian fighter after suffering heavy losses from the battle in the Syrian town of Kobani.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the female soldier allegedly captured by the ISIL extremists is a “female Zionist soldier” while other jihadists claim that it is Gill Rosenberg, a woman serving the Israeli military and a volunteer to fight with the Kurds.
An Israeli foreign ministry spokesman released a statement saying they still do not have information about the alleged captured woman but they are closely monitoring the situation.
The Observatory also said at least 50 jihadists died as Kurdish defenders battled against them. However, Canada announced that they are aware of reports that one of its citizens might have been captured by the extremists.
The female soldier who was allegedly captured is an Israeli-Canadian woman who has been fighting with the Kurds.
Aside from the losses, the Observatory also pointed out that the U.S.-led coalition hit another 30 targets in the de facto capital of the ISIL militants, Raqa. However, information about how many have been killed in the attack was not immediately available.
According to Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman, the set of raids in Raqa might not be the largest but it has been quite a time since they have seen such number of targets successfully hit.
Also on Sunday, the Syrian government launched strikes killing 29 civilians. Among these fatalities, seven women and three children were killed.
The ISIL militants launched a first-time attack against the border that separates the Syrian Kurdish town from Turkey resulting to the battle and airstrikes. However, Kurdish officials noted that the attack allegedly came from the Turkish soil.
The Turks, on the other hand, released a statement denying the allegations.
ISIL militants have advanced on Kobani back in September 16 this year in hopes of quickly seizing the said town and to secure their control over the Syrian-Turkish border. Before the Kobani advances, they also successfully took over a couple of town in Iraq.
