After years of security tightening, regime’s authorities reduce their checkpoints within Homs city and the capital Damascus consecutively

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights learned that the regime forces resumed the removal of security checkpoints inside the neighborhoods and roads of Homs city in central Syria, where they removed the checkpoints and opened the roads between the neighborhoods at deferent periods of time during the last few days and months, after they were closed during the presence of factions within Homs city, and the checkpoints of the regime forces and militiamen loyal to them are now concentrated at the entrances of the city and its surroundings.

In the same context, the neighborhoods of Homs city are witnessing the return of their inhabitants and residents to their homes and areas; but not in large numbers, given the citizens’ fear of continued harassment by the regime forces and militiamen loyal to them, of attacks, searches, raids, interrogations and arrests sometimes, also some of the neighborhoods which were in contact with the pro-regime gunmen are witnessing frequent and continuous “looting” operations, in which they steal the citizens’ property of what is left for them in those neighborhoods.

The removal of these checkpoints from Homs city comes after the start of removing several checkpoints in July 2017, where the Syrian Observatory monitored since the first half of 2018 that the regime forces emptied the military checkpoints and definitely removed, especially the checkpoints which make traffic within the neighborhoods of the capital Damascus, where the Syrian Observatory received information that the regime forces will continue removing checkpoints; until removing all of the checkpoints of the regime forces and the gunmen loyal to them of the Defense Forces, popular committees and other groups within the capital of Damascus, and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitored that the regime forces removed checkpoints from the center of the capital Damascus, and intersected sources confirmed that members of the regime forces have removed checkpoints from several areas in the capital Damascus, where they removed some of the checkpoints in the center of the capital Damascus linking the capital’s neighborhoods, where the process of decreasing the number of the checkpoints came after completing the military operations in the south of the capital, its vicinity and countryside, and it is expected that the coming days will witness the removal of more checkpoints in the center of Damascus and its outskirts.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights published on the 22nd of May 2018, that the regime forces and militiamen loyal to them of Syrian and non-Syrian nationalities; finishing the sweep operations in Yarmouk Camp -the capital of the Palestinian dispersion- and al-Tadamon neighbourhood, imposing their full control over the south of Damascus after the withdrawal of members of the “Islamic State” organization and their families, according to a secret agreement that took place between the regime and organization, where about 1600 members of the “Islamic State” organization have gotten out of Yarmouk Camp and al-Tadamon towards the Syrian Desert under a full Russian supervision, and with this control, the regime forces and their allies have recovered Damascus province and its countryside (Rif Dimashq) completely, except for al-Tanf area which is under the control of the International Coalition Forces at the Syrian – Iraqi border.
