At least 7 dead, 20 wounded when bus blows up in Damascus
At least seven civilians were killed and 20 injured on Sunday when a bus blew up in Syria’s capital of Damascus near the Al Hamidiya marketplace, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.
The bus had Lebanese registry and Shiite visitors were traveling on board, the NGO said, although it did not specify the nationalities of the victims.
Meanwhile, Syria’s state-run news agency Sana said that a “terrorist explosion” had killed four people and injured 19 on the bus.
Damascus has been the site of numerous terrorist attacks since the civil war broke out in 2011, a conflict that has resulted in more than 200,000 deaths, the United Nations said.
Radical Sunni groups fighting the regime of Bashar al-Assad, including the Al Nusra Front and the Islamic State, have staged other attacks targeting Shiites.
Damascus’s historic Al Hamidiya zone, where the capital’s largest marketplace is located, was one of the must-see tourist sites in Syria before the start of the conflict. EFE
