Syria: NGO, 70 killed in regime raids on Damascus suburb

(ANSAmed) – BEIRUT, FEBRUARY 6 – At least 70 people, including minors and women, have been reported killed in over 60 air raids carried out by the Syrian regime’s air force on rebel-controlled suburbs of Damascus, according to the UK-based monitoring group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).

The air offensive kicked off following rocket and mortar attacks carried out against capital districts by rebel groups in which six people were killed, according to official media.

SOHR said the death toll from air raids Friday is expected to increase as a number of those injured are in critical condition.

Victims currently include 12 minors and about 10 women.

The regime carried out raids with bombs, air-to-surface missiles and explosive barrels in the areas of Duma, Kfar Batna, Arbin, Saqba and Ayn Tarma east of the capital.

Death tolls released by the monitoring group and by Syrian official news agency Sana cannot be independently verified as authorities in Damascus and opposition armed groups do not give journalists free access to the areas under their control.
