UN Security Council launches resolution to cut funding to Daesh

The UN Security Council will soon put into action a new resolution aimed at cutting off funding to Daesh, reports AFP.

Through this resolution, the UN hopes to choke off millions of dollars derived from oil sales, antiquities trafficking, and ransom payments, in order to prevent more financial resources from falling into the hands of terrorist organizations.

The UN urges all 193 member states to adopt the resolution as a way of taking “appropriate steps” to “prevent terrorists from benefiting directly or indirectly from ransom payments for from political concessions,” reports AFP.

Sanctions will be implemented against individuals and entities that trade in oil with Daesh and other terrorist organizations in Syria, such as al-Nusra Front. The resolution also allows for the use of force in the war against terrorism, though it does not specifically authorize military force.
