mass grave with 200 bodies found in Raqqa

Women stoned to death by ISIS are among the approximately 200 bodies found in a mass grave in Raqqa, in northern Syria, according to UK-based monitoring group Syrian Observatory for Human rights. Raqqa was the capital of the so-called ‘Islamic State’ in Syria from 2014 to 2017.

According to the NGO, the 200 bodies include those of women bearing the signs of stoning. Other human remains were wrapped in what looked like the remains of orange bodysuits used by ISIS for prisoners who were executed, a reminder of the garments used for prisoners at US Guantanamo Bay detention camp.

Another mass grave was discovered at the end of May in an area near Dayr az Zor in eastern Syria, long controlled by ISIS.

Another mass grave with the remains of an estimated 1,700 bodies was found in April in Raqqa.
