Russia rejects claims of deadly attack on Syrian city

Russia has rejected reports that its aircraft were behind a series of deadly airstrikes that killed and injured dozens of people in a terrorist-controlled city in Syria’s northwestern province of Idlib.

“The statements of anonymous representatives of the White Helmets organization financed by Britain and the US about an alleged strike by Russian planes on a market in Maaret al-Numan (the province of Idlib) are a fake news story,” Russia’s Ministry of Defense said Monday.

The statement came shortly after the White Helmets so-called aid group claimed that a Russian airstrike in the densely-populated city had killed 50 people and wounded many more.

The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also announced that Moscow was responsible for the attacks that targeted a “wholesale vegetable market, where the attack took place.

“The Russian air force was not carrying out any missions in this part of Syria,” the Russian defense ministry’s statement further said.
