UN Chief: 100,000 Syrians Detained, Abducted or ‘Disappeared’

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has accused Bashar-al Assad’s regime of detaining, abducting or altogether “disappearing” some 100,000 Syrians during the course of the eight-years-long war. A UN official thereafter urged Damascus to abide by international law by releasing those arbitrarily held, and providing information about individuals who have gone missing. According to the authoritative Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, up to 600,000 people have been killed since the outbreak of the conflict in 2011, including more than 10,000 women and 20,000 children. Moreover, out of Syria’s pre-war population of approximately 22 million, over 6 million civilians have been internally displaced and some 7 million others have sought refuge in neighboring countries such as Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon.
