Explosion kills 9 in Turkey-controlled Syrian town

At least nine people have been killed in what appears to be a car bomb explosion in a northern Syria town controlled by Turkey.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack. But the Turkish defense ministry says an armed Kurdish group is to blame.

The incident occurred on Saturday in the town of Tel Abyad, near Syria’s border with Turkey.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says 22 people were wounded.

The town has been controlled by the Turkish military since being taken in a cross-border offensive.

It is the fourth explosion in the area this month. A car bomb killed 13 civilians on November 2.

The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces have denied responsibility. They tweeted that Turkish-backed militias are behind the explosion as part of an effort to drive the Kurds from Tel Abyad.
