At least 4 people killed in air raids in northwestern Syria

Air strikes on areas in the last major rebel stronghold in northwestern Syria killed at least four people, including women and children, and wounded others when a three-month ceasefire broke out, opposition activists said.

The bombing of Idlib province has increased in recent weeks as the government appears to be preparing for an offensive in the rebel-held areas east of the province to secure the main road connecting the capital, Damascus, with the northern city of Aleppo, the largest Syrian city, connects and once trade center.

The Syrian Human Rights Observatory and the opposition’s Syrian civil defense said four people, including one child and two women, were killed in air raids on the rebel-held village of Bara.

The observatory said that five more were killed in the village of Ibdeita and one child in another nearby village.

Immediately after the violence in Syria, which killed some 400,000 people, injured more than one million, and displaced half of the country’s pre-war population in an eight-year conflict, there are varying numbers of casualties.

At the beginning of this year, Syrian troops launched a four-month offensive against Idlib, which is dominated by al-Qaida fighters. The government offensive forced hundreds of thousands of civilians to leave their homes.

A fragile ceasefire has stopped the government’s move at the end of August, but has been repeatedly violated in recent weeks.
