“Jisr Al-Shughour” Education Union deprives teachers of regime’s Directorate of Education of entering schools

“Jisr al-Shughour” Education Union issued a decision to stop dealing with all teachers belonging to the regime’s educational clusters and to prevent them from entering schools.

The number of teachers employed in Idlib’s Education Directorate of the regime is about 2,000 teachers who were active in dozens of schools in Idlib province, the majority of which are now under regime control after the recent battles. Over 700 schools were targeted and put out of service during the recent military escalations since the beginning of last year, out of a total of 1,190 schools.

At the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year, the Syrian Observatory monitored the stopping of the European commission’s grants to education directorates in the areas held by “Tahrir al-Sham” and the opposition factions in north-western Syria. The organization “Cominix” stopped its support completely, which was covering 65 per cent of the total support provided to the education directorates in Aleppo, Idlib, Latakia and Hama.

“Cominix” has been signing nine-month annual contracts to meet the needs of schools and pay teachers’ salaries. Hundreds of teachers had been unpaid, and the operational cost of dozens of schools in those areas had been lost after the support ceased.
