Prosthetics and physical therapy center closed down in Raqqa, due to shortage of supplies
The center for prosthetics and physical therapy in Raqqa closed on April 27 due to lack of medical supplies and surgical tools.
The center is the first of its kind in Raqqa, which is concerned with victims of mine explosions. It was established in early 2018 by volunteer doctors and physical therapists who performed many successful surgeries and fitting of artificial limbs. With little support, center was able to restore hope for amputees during 2018 and 2019.
From February 27 last year to the date of its closure, the center performed several operations, they are as follows:
Fitting of artificial limbs for 52 people of various types of lower limb amputations, in addition to providing physiotherapy care to 700 patients.
Performing 42 corrective limps surgeries, three metal plate implant operations and installing three external devices.
Six surgeries to remove shrapnels, implanting cosmetic eye lens and children’s orthotics for 31 beneficiaries, as well as providing psychological support services for 60 cases.
The center’s activities also included the distribution of clothing for children of amputees and Ramadan Iftar campaigns for children of amputees and their families.
Suspension of work at the center “is due to shortages of medicines and sterilisers, as no organisation provides supplies to the center,” officials in charge of the center said.
