Makhlouf Purge | Nearly 60 employees arrested since recent campaign against Makhlouf’s business started

Security campaign continues against constructions and associations belonging to Rami Makhlouf, the cousin of Syrian regime president Bashar al-Assad.

Reliable sources have told the Syrian Observatory that regime security services escorted with “Russian police” launched new raids in the past few days, arresting 19 employees in “Al-Bostan Association” in several provinces, and they are as follows: eight employees in Latakia, seven in Damascus and four in Homs. It is worth noting that all 19 employees were arrested for “corruption”.

As more employees arrested, the number of managers, employees and technicians in constructions and associations belonging to Rami Makhlouf, who have been arrested since the start of the recent security campaign in late April 2020 rose to nearly 60 (40 in Syriatel Company and 19 in Al-Bostan Association). They were arrested in Damascus, Aleppo, Homs, Latakia and Tartus.

On the other hand, the exchange rate of the U.S. dollar against the Syrian pound has increased greatly after Makhlouf appeared in the first video footage on 30 April 2020. The Syrian pound against the US dollar recorded 1,270 SYL at that time, but now, just after today’s video footage, the Syrian pound against the US dollar recorded 1,700 SYL.

These developments come at a time when Syria’s economy is collapsing in regime-held areas, amid anticipation for applying “Caesar Act” soon.
