Death toll in 2019 | 11,215 people killed, about one third of whom were civilians

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has documented the death of 11,215 persons between December 31, 2018 to December 31, 2019.

A breakdown of the overall death toll is as follows:

  • Civilian: 3,473 Syrians, including 1,021 children under the age of eighteen and 508 females over the age of eighteen.
  • Syrian fighters of rebel and Islamic factions and other various factions, movements, and organizations: 1,592
  • Syria Democratic Forces (SDF): 1,005
  • Syrian army defectors: three
  • Bashar al-Assad’s regime forces: 1,523
  • National Defense Forces, members of popular committees and regime loyalist of Syrian nationality: 1,241
  • Gunmen of non-Syrian citizens loyal to regime forces of the Shiite community: 188
  • Unidentified people: 61
  • Fighters of Islamic Factions, ISIS members,( Al Nusra Front), Al Muhajireen wal Ansar army and the Turkistan Islamic Party of non-Syrian citizens: 2,096
  • Turkish soldiers: 22
  • International coalition: four

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also meticulously documented, in spreadsheets, the death toll according to the ‘perpetrator’ category. A breakdown of total number of civilian deaths of 3,473 by the ‘perpetrator’ category is as follows:

  • Civilians killed by Bashar al-Assad’s regime warplanes: 606
  • Civilians killed by Bashar al-Assad’s regime helicopters: 105
  • Civilians killed by Al-Assad regime forces: 469
  • Death toll in regime detention centers and prisons: 89 civilians

Death toll by foreign powers, intervening in Syria under the pretext of helping the Syrian people to achieve justice get rid of oppression, is as follows:

  • Civilians killed by Russian warplanes: 453
  • Civilians killed by Turkish forces: 12
  • Turkish Jandarma (Border Guard Forces): 28 civilians
  • International Coalition bombardment: 270 civilians
  • Israeli airstrikes: eight civilians 

Death toll caused by various ‘anti-regime’ formations and groups such as ISIS, opposition factions, Syria Democratic Forces (SDF), and other groups in Syria:

  • Opposition factions: 57 civilians
  • ISIS: 13 civilians
  • Jihadist groups and HTS: 72 civilians
  • SDF: 42 civilians
  • Factions operatives in military operation (Peace Spring): 139 civilians

Death toll caused by various reasons:

  • Civilians killed by unknown circumstances: 215
  • Civilians killed by sporadic assassinations: 97
  • Civilians killed by booby-trapped explosions: 205
  • Civilians died due to poor health conditions in Al Hawl camp: 352
  • Civilians killed by mines and improvised explosive devices: 241
