Coronavirus outbreaks in regime-held areas | More infection cases detected, and the government continues misinformation

At a time when the novel pandemic hits all Syrian provinces, the Syrian regime is still following the policy of misinformation, keeping the real number of deaths and infection cases with coronavirus in areas under its control secret. Meanwhile, reliable medical sources have informed SOHR that the regime-held areas experience a real catastrophe in the wake of the noticeable rapid increase in numbers of infection cases and deaths. According to the medical sources, tens of new infection cases were detected in just a few hours, while the deceased reached nearly 42 persons.

According to SOHR statistics, based on reports obtained from reliable medical sources in regime-controlled areas, the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases reached 4,250, of whom 520 cases recovered while 392 cases died.

“The cases are distributed in all Syrian provinces. However, most of the deceased and infection cases have been in Damascus and Rif Dimashq,” medical sources said.

SOHR activists have monitored growing popular anger in regime-held areas over the government’s handling with the virus as it continues keeping the real number of infection cases secret and has not imposed needed precautionary measures. In addition, these areas suffer from deteriorating medical services, amid fears of the collapse of already dilapidated health system.

Furthermore, the regime-controlled areas experience dramatic living conditions because of the prohibitively high prices, deteriorating economic conditions, unemployment and lack of job opportunities, in addition to the frequent interruption of electricity.
