U.S.-led Coalition base targeted with three rockets in eastern Syria

Spokesperson for the Coalition, Colonel Myles B. Caggins III stated that three small rockets landed near the Koniko base in eastern Syria on Tuesday evening.

“The rockets did not cause any casualties or material damage to the coalition forces,” Caggins added, without specifying the party behind the targeting.

The Koniko base has been targeted by rockets of unknown origin on previous occasions.

The base, located to the east of Dayro Zcuro, is considered one of the most important bases of the Coalition in Syria. The nearby oil fields contain the largest gas processing plant in Syria and is used for the production of electrical energy.

U.S. and Coalition forces remained at the Koniko base even after U.S. President Donald Trump’s unilateral decision to withdraw from northern Syria following a phone call with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The sudden U.S. withdrawal — which was partially halted weeks later — precipitated a Turkish invasion of the region which killed approximately 150 civilians and displaced over 300,000 people, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. According to the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency, the Turkish invasion destabilized the region and breathed new life into the Islamic State.

Once some of the safest areas in Syria, the areas now under Turkish occupation suffer from endemic criminality and policies of ethnic and religious cleansing.
