Domestic violence | Woman commits suicide in Idlib countryside

Violence and abuse against women in Syrian society are increasing, as the war and its effects continue to impact the psychological of civilians; and society, at large, fails to highlight such issues because of the stigma they bring.

In this context, a female teacher at a school in Atma town in northern Idlib countryside committed suicide today, after being abused by her husband and repeatedly beaten with sharp objects, and tortured by her husband’s family, who also happen to be her close paternal relatives. This chronic abuse pushed the woman to commit suicide to end her agony suffering.

Society in general still treat women conventionally and with a tribal logic, and embroil them them in inheritance issues and family problems, in which women are being exploited.

Women still live in poverty, homelessness, celibacy and widowhood, carrying heavy burdens such as raising children and supporting the family after the loss of their husbands, which have made them vulnerable to violence and exploitation.
