Large-scale security campaign | Russian-backed regime forces continue sweeping operations in Syrian desert, searching for ISIS cells

Regime forces, loyal militias and Russian-backed militias are continuing broad sweeping operations in the Syrian desert in Homs countryside and the triangle of Aleppo-Hama-Al-Raqqah, searching for ISIS cells. These sweeping operations are backed by considerable Russian support through intensive airstrikes on a daily basis, in an attempt to contain ISIS escalating operations in the region.

On Friday, SOHR sources reported Russian jets execute intensive airstrikes on a daily basis, targeting ISIS positions in the Syrian desert, in an attempt to put an end to the escalating ISIS activities there. In the recent times, ISIS unleashed several attacks targeting various positions of regime forces and loyal militias in the Syrian desert.

On August 29, SOHR sources reported that ISIS operations, including ambushes, attacks and detonations, were increasingly targeting regime forces and loyal militias throughout the Syrian desert, at a time when the security campaigns by the Russian-backed regime forces were not able to contain these activities.

During the past week, ISIS members unleashed several attacks and set up ambushes in different places in the Syrian desert, despite tens of airstrikes executed daily by Russian jets on ISIS positions there.

According to SOHR sources, ISIS operations focused on positions in (1) an area between Al-Shawla desert in western Deir Ezzor and Al-Bokamal desert in the east, (2) Deir Ezzor-Al-Mayadeen road, (3) Hmimah-T3 road to the flank of Palmyra city in eastern Homs, (4) Al-Rassafah area in Al-Raqqah countryside, (5) Ithriyah area in northern Hama and (6) Al-Suwaidaa desert.

ISIS operations in that week resulted in the death of at least 48 regime soldiers and loyal militiamen, including officers and commanders, in addition to injuries to tens others, while over 50 other soldiers and militiamen went missing during sweeping operations in the Syrian desert. However, 22 ISIS members were also killed in the same period in clashes and Russian airstrikes.
