Two deadly explosions rock downtown Sari Kani in northern Syria

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Two explosions took place in the heart of the northern Syria city of Sari Kani (Ras al-Ain) on Saturday, killing and injuring a number of civilians, according to media reports.

The explosions rocked two different parts of the city’s bazaar, causing a “large number” of casualties, according to Turkish news outlet IHA.

The blasts were caused by improvised explosive devices, killing two civilians and injuring seven others, according to conflict monitor Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

People injured in the explosion were taken across the Syria-Turkey border to a private hospital in Sanliurfa, IHA also reported.

Sari Kani and the neighbouring city of Gire Spi (Tal Abyad) were captured by Turkey and its Syrian proxies in October 2019, after they attacked the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) that previously held the area.

According to a video shared by the Democratic Union Party (PYD), which rules much of northeast Syria (Rojava), several shops were on fire.

It is not yet clear who carried out the attacks, but the area sometimes witnesses clashes between Turkish and Turkey-backed forces and the SDF.

Several, similarly deadly attacks have taken place in the city since October 2019.
