Militants Suffered Heavy Barrage From Syrian Army In Greater Idlib
On September 13, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) carried out intense rocket and artillery strikes at militants’ positions in the al-Zawiya Mount in the southern part of Greater Idlib.
The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the army had launched 350 rockets and artillery rounds at the towns of Fatterah, Kafar Aweed, Sufuhon, Kansafra, al-Bara, Shnan, Fleifel and Benin.
“Until the moment, there has been no information on human losses [as a result of the SAA shelling],” the monitoring group said in a report.
In the last few days, Greater Idlib militants, led by al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, have carried out many attacks on SAA troops in the region. A number of Syrian service members were killed or injured.
The SAA’s artillery and rocket strikes were likely a response to these attacks, which violate the March 5 Russian-Turkish agreement on Greater Idlib.
Earlier this week, warplanes of the Russian Aerospace Forces carried out two waves of airstrikes on Greater Idlib. The airstrikes hit northern Lattakia and the western outskirts of Idlib city.
The ceasefire in Greater Idlib appears to be on the brink of collapse. The majority of the region’s militants are unwilling to respect the March 5 agreement. This may soon lead to a new military confrontation.
