SOHR | “Reports of 4,000 Turkish-backed Syrian fighters in Azerbaijan untrue”

Very reliable SOHR sources have confirmed that reports circulated on media outlets considering Turkey’s transfer of nearly 4,000 fighters of Turkish-backed Syrian factions to Azerbaijan in order to join the war against Armenia are completely false.

The sources have confirmed that the number of Turkish-backed Syrian mercenaries in Azerbaijan approximates 320, and they have been transported by Turkish security companies. It is worth noting that these fighters have not participated in any battles so far.

“Most of the Syrian fighters sent to Azerbaijan are of Turkmen descent, and they went to Azerbaijan under the pretext of ‘defending the national cause’, while the Turkish-backed Arab factions refused to send their fighters to Azerbaijan,” SOHR sources added.

On the other hand, reliable sources have informed SOHR that Armenian-born Syrian fighters were transported to Armenia to join the war there on the side of Armenia against Azerbaijan.

On Sunday, SOHR sources reported that a batch of Syrian fighters of Turkish-backed factions arrived in Azerbaijan from Turkey. This batch arrived in Turkey a few days earlier from Afrin in north-western countryside of Aleppo.

SOHR sources also confirmed that there was another batch preparing itself to go to Azerbaijan. These developments came as a part of Turkey’s policy of turning the Syrian fighters into mercenaries.
