Military operations in Syrian desert | Regime forces shell Deir Ezzor desert, and nearly 30 jets and helicopters strike ISIS positions
Reliable sources have told SOHR that regime forces, stationed in Al-Hemdan airbase on the outskirts of Al-Bokamal city in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor, shelled positions in the southern desert of the city, paving the way for infantry troops which are still sweeping the Syrian desert, searching for ISIS cells.
On the other hand, over 25 Russian fighter jets were seen flying over the area and executing several airstrikes, targeting ISIS positions in Itherya area in the eastern countryside of Hama. Moreover, four helicopters threw barrel bombs on the area. However, no casualties have been reported so far.
Yesterday, SOHR activists said that the military operations continued on several frontlines in the Syrian desert, as fierce clashes resumed between regime forces and loyal militias on the one hand, and Islamic State members on the other, on frontlines of the eastern countryside of Hama. The clashes coincided with renewed airstrikes by Russian aircraft and regime helicopters, amid reports of further casualties on both sides.
An ISIS group had targeted a column of regime forces in al-Sukhna area in Homs desert, on the administrative border with Deir Ezzor, leaving casualties and destroying regime vehicles.
SOHR activists also documented large number of fatalities on both sides as a result of the intensive aerial and ground shelling and fierce clashes. The number of fatalities among regime forces and loyalists reached 39, while ISIS lost 22 members so far. The death toll is expected to rise further, as several soldiers and members have been injured, some seriously.
