Individual conflicts in asylum countries plague Syrian refugees | Blazes devour tens of Syrians’ tents in Lebanon

SOHR renew appeals to international community to exert pressure on hosting states not to abandon their responsibilities to Syrian refugees

The area of Miniyeh in northern Lebanon experienced an altercation, last night, between several Syrian young people and other Lebanese ones, which evolved to a fight that left several injured on both sides. In the wake of this individual dispute, several Lebanese young men set fire to tens of tents in a Syrian refugee camp in the region.

In the meantime, several explosions were heard in the camp after the explosion of gas cylinders due to the blazes which devoured large number of tents, before the Lebanese security services encircled the camp and rescue teams could control and extinguish the blazes. An investigation has been opened on the blazes which forced hundreds of refugees to flee to neighbouring areas.

This is not the first incident of its kind whether in Lebanon, Turkey or other neighbouring countries, as refugees could be exposed to such incidents ignited after individual conflicts among people of the same nation. However, situation is always worsened when it is related to Syrian refugees. The latest of such incidents was the killing of a Lebanese young man by a Syrian one in Al-Beshri area in northern Lebanon in November.

We, at the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, renew our appeals to the international community and relevant organizations to exert pressure on the Lebanese authorities and other hosting countries to find a lasting solution to such individual actions, held the perpetrators accountable, and keep refugees’ lives safe in accordance with the charters and treaties.
