Second attack in 2021 | Israeli intensive strikes on Deir Ezzor kill and injure more than 50

Syrian Observatory has obtained further details about the recent Israeli attack on Deir Ezzor province in the early hours of Wednesday morning which targeted positions, weapons warehouses and ammunition depots of regime forces, the Lebanese Hezbollah, Iranian forces and their proxy militias, mainly “Fatemiyoun Brigade”, in the area between Deir Ezzor city and the Syria-Iraq border in Al-Bokamal desert.

According to SOHR sources, Israel targeted Ayyash warehouses, Sa’ka camp and other positions on the outskirts of Deir Ezzor city with more than ten strikes, positions, weapons warehouses and ammunition depots in Al-Bokamal desert with six strikes, and positions and warehouses in Al-Mayadeen desert with two strikes. It is worth noting that more than one missile hit these positions in each strike.

The recent Israeli attack, which is the second one in 2021, left great human and material losses, as 23 members of Iranian and regime forces and their proxies, including seven Syrians, were killed (14 in Deir Ezzor and nine in Al-Mayadeen and Al-Bokamal). The death toll is expected to rise as the attack left over 28 militiamen injured, some seriously. There are unconfirmed reports of more casualties.

The attack also destroyed military positions, weapons and ammunition warehouses and vehicles. Furthermore, loud explosions were heard during and after the Israeli attack due to the explosion of ammunition in the targeted positions.

On January 6, SOHR sources reported that Israeli airstrikes targeted the radar system battalion in the west of Al-Dour village in Al-Suwaidaa countryside, “Najran” battalion, north-west of Al-Suwaidaa at the administrative border with Daraa governorate, and the perimeter of the 1st Division in al-Keswa area and other sites on the Damascus-Daraa road.

It is worth noting that the targeted areas are hosting militias loyal to Iranian forces and Lebanese Hezbollah, as well as regime forces and loyalists.

It is also worth noting that the regime Air-Defences were able to intercept some of the Israeli missiles for the first time in many months, while other missiles reached their targets, and caused human and material losses.

The attack left three people dead, two of them in al-Kiswa area and the other in the radar system battalion in Al-Suwaidaa, while more than 11 people were injured, some seriously. A radar system was also destroyed west of Sweida, as well as the destruction of weapons depots, south of the capital.

SOHR documented 39 aerial and rocket attacks in 2020, during which Israel targeted several positions in Syria, destroying 135 targets, including buildings, warehouses, headquarters, centres and vehicles. These strikes killed 217 people and they were as follows:

  • Four civilians, including one woman
