Syria Claims to Have Reacted to ‘Israeli aggression’

Syrian forces responded to “Israeli aggression” in the south of the country late on Wednesday, the state news agency reported.

At approximately 11pm (21:00 GMT), Israel fired missiles from the occupied Golan Heights and caused material harm, the SANA state news agency reported, citing a military source.

“Our anti-air defences responded … and intercepted most of the enemy missiles,” the source added.

In the southern Quneitra province, the United Kingdom-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said the Israeli bombing hit a place belonging to “regime forces and where pro-Iranian militias are also present.”

Witnesses in Damascus, the capital, told Reuters news agency that they had heard the sound of explosions.

Israel regularly conducts raids in Syria, often against Iran-related targets, in what it considers to be an effort to prevent its arch-enemy from consolidating its foothold along its northern frontier.

But individual raids are barely noticed by the Israeli army and they have not commented on the latest news.

However, without providing information, the army said it achieved around 50 goals in the war-torn country during 2020.

According to the Observatory, which relies on ground sources in Syria, 57 government and allied fighters were killed by Israeli attacks on eastern Syria on 13 January in the deadliest raids since Israel started its assaults.

On January 22, Israeli raids in the Syrian province of Hama killed four civilians, including two girls, SANA announced.

After Israel carried out air strikes on positions in southern Syria and south of the capital of Damascus on January 7, at least three pro-Iran fighters were killed.

In support of President Bashar al-Assad, Iran has representatives of its own military as well as fighters from a number of nationalities, including the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah.

In addition, Israeli jets were suspected of breaching Lebanese airspace and crossing the skies over Beirut in frequent low-altitude flights that added to the jitters in the capital of Lebanon.
