Highest death toll in 2021 | ISIS ambushes regime forces and proxy militias in Al-Mayadeen desert, killing 26

Reliable sources in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor have informed the Syrian Observatory that ISIS established a new ambush in the early hours of Monday morning, targeting a military column of regime forces and the pro-regime and Russia militia of “Liwaa Al-Quds” near Faydat Ibn Muwayni’ in Al-Mayadeen desert, while they were combing the region.

Fierce clashes erupted between both sides leaving great human losses, as SOHR activists have documented the death of 26 regime soldiers and loyal militiamen, while others sustained various injuries, some seriously. ISIS also lost 11 members. It is worth noting that this death toll is the highest one on 2021, and the second largest death toll after this of earlier ISIS ambush in December 2020, which left 39 regime soldiers and loyal militiamen dead. According to SOHR sources, large reinforcement of regime forces and the “National Defence Forces” (NDF) were seen heading this morning from Al-Mayadeen to the conflict zone.

Since 24th of March 2019, SOHR has documented the killing of at least 1,308 regime soldiers and loyalists of Syrian and non-Syrian nationalities, including at least two Russians, and 145 Iranian-backed militiamen of non-Syrian nationalities. All were killed in attacks, bombings and ambushes by the “Islamic State”, west of Euphrates in the deserts of Deir Ezzor, Homs, and Al-Suwaidaa.

Also, four civilians working in gas fields, 11 shepherds and four other people were killed and documented by SOHR in the same period, from late March 2019 until today. They were killed in attacks by ISIS cells. While 733 ISIS members were also killed in attacks and bombardment in the same period.
