Fearing repeated attacks | Iranian-backed militias hide heavy weapons in tunnel system in Al-Mayadeen city

Deir Ezzor Province – Syrian Observatory for Human Rights: Reliable SOHR sources have confirmed that IRGC-affiliated afghani militia of “Fatemiyoun” transported, in the past few days, a large number of Katyusha missiles and some heavy weapons, which had been stored in cattle barns in Al-Hawi area in Al-Mayadeen city, to a tunnel system dug underground by the Islamic State during its control of the city.

The tunnel system where the missiles and heavy weapons have been stored is located in “Sheikh Anas” area, near sheep market on the outskirts of Al-Mayadeen city. It is worth noting that this tunnel system is connected to another tunnel system leading to Al-Rahbah, Al-Mazare’ area and the centre of Al-Mayadeen city in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor.

On February 13, SOHR sources reported that the Iranian-backed militias redeployed their troops near the western banks of the Euphrates river, as a part of ongoing attempts of camouflage in order to avoid the escalating attacks on their positions whether by Israel or the International Coalition.

According to SOHR sources, the Iranian-backed militias transported former headquarters, weapons and ammunition to new positions and warehouses in Al-Bokamal, Al-Mayadeen and the outskirts of Deir Ezzor city. It is worth noting that the Iranian-backed militias moved in the region under cover, as they often used civilian vehicles and trucks to transfer their weapons and ammunition for fear of the repeated attacks which recently inflicted great human and material losses.
