Vehicle explosion in Syria’s Sari Kani kills at least two

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — A vehicle exploded in a crowded area in the north Syrian town of Sari Kani (Ras al-Ain) on Thursday, killing at least two people and injuring several more, a war monitor and Turkish state media have reported.

The explosion took place in a poultry market in the town’s center, killing two civilians and injuring seven others, reported Turkish state-owned Anadolu Agency (AA).

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported four deaths and eight injuries, identifying the explosive-laden vehicle as a van.

An investigation has been launched into the incident, according to AA. The outlet also said that the town’s Turkey-backed security forces suspect the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) conducted the attack.

Sari Kani and the neighboring town of Gire Spi (Tal Abyad) used to be under the control of the YPG, until Turkey and its Syrian proxies invaded much of northern Syria in October 2019.

The security forces have since blamed most of the explosions in Sari Kani on the YPG, although the group has said that it does not target civilians.
