Al-Hasakeh countryside | Civilian shot dead by members of “Self-Defense” training centre

SOHR sources say that Al-Malikia hospital in Al-Hasakah countryside handed over today the body of a young man, who was shot dead yesterday by officials of the “Tel Coujar Academy”, which is a training centre for “Self-Defense” members, while trying to escape, refusing to undergo compulsory conscription.

Few days ago, reliable sources informed SOHR that the joint president of “Hajeen Educational Centre”of the Self-Administration, submitted her resignation on Thursday after two houses of her family were burned down by unknown persons and being threatened several times.

On February 21, reliable sources informed SOHR that the teachers in the villages and towns of Al-Susah, Gharanij, Hajin and other areas in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor started a strike in their schools, expressing rejection of the Autonomous Administration’s decision imposing mandatory conscription on teachers, and demanding increase of their salaries, especially with the recent Syrian currency plunge and high prices throughout Syria.

On February 17, SOHR sources reported that teachers in Al-Shuhayl town in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor staged a vigil, protesting their poor living conditions and “mandatory conscription” decision in areas held by the Autonomous Administration. A statement was issued, of which SOHR obtained a copy: “We, the residents, teachers and students of Al-Shuhayl demand the following:

  • Improvement of living conditions.

  • Increase of salaries in line with the current situation

  • Total cancellation of mandatory military conscription.
