17th anniversary | Residents commemorate the “Kurds’ Uprising” in north and east Syria regions

On March 12, 2004, an uprising by Syrian Kurds broke out when riots started during a football match between Al-Jihad and Al-Fetwwah football teams within the Syrian Premier League at the “7th of April” stadium in Al-Qamishli city. At that day skirmishes sparked between the fans of the two teams, along with pelting with stones. The intervention of security forces, which were attempting to end the riots using live bullets, resulted in the death and injury of several people, while others sustained various wounds due to the scramble of the crowds. Strikes and protests by the Kurds extended to cover almost all Kurdish areas for nearly a week, before regime security services repressed them after the death of nearly 40 persons, according to local sources. It s worth noting that hundreds of people were arrested during the uprising.

SOHR activists have reported seeing crowds of people, today, at the “12th of March” stadium in Al-Qamishly city, commemorating the Kurds’ Uprising.

It is worth noting that this stadium had been known as “7th of April” stadium during the Syrian regime’s control of the province, before the Autonomous Administration in north and east Syria region changed its name to “12th of March” stadium in honour of the “martyrs” who were killed during the Kurds’ Uprising.
