Security chaos in Daraa | Unknown gunmen assassinate collaborator with regime security services on the outskirts of Daraa al-Balad

Daraa Governorate – Syrian Observatory for Human Rights:

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has documented the killing of a collaborator with the regime security services on the outskirts of Daraa al-Balad city, after being shot dead by unknown gunmen in the area of Al-Shayah.

SOHR sources have reported that an officer of the military security service has survived an assassination attempt, after unknown gunmen opened fire on him and his escort this morning while traveling in Al-Na’ema town in the eastern countryside of Daraa. However, the officer’s escort has sustained serious injuries due to the gunfire. This incident comes in light of the escalating security chaos across Daraa province, including the assassinations and assassination attempts mostly target informants, volunteers and collaborators with regime forces as well as members with settled-status.

Since the beginning of the security chaos in Daraa in early June 2019, Syrian Observatory activists have documented more than 972 attacks and assassination attempts by gunfire and detonations of IEDs, motorcycle-bombs and car-bombs. These attacks and assassinations claimed the lives of 655 persons, categorised as follows:

  • 180 civilians, including 12 women and 17 children

  • 305 regime soldiers, loyalists and collaborators with regime security services

  • 119 fighters of factions that struck “reconciliation and settlements” deals with the regime and became in the ranks of regime’s security branches, including former commanders

  • 23 Syrian militiamen affiliated to the Lebanese Hezbollah and Iranian forces

  • 26 members of the so-called 5th Corps which was established by Russia.
