Armed attack | Unknown gunmen open fire on regime checkpoint in eastern Daraa

Daraa Province – Syrian Observatory for Human Rights: SOHR sources reported that unknown gunmen opened fire with light weapons on regime checkpoint on the road between Al-Karak Al-Sharqi and Rakham in the eastern countryside of Daraa. The attack, which took place in the early hours of Sunday morning, left no casualties.

It is worth noting that the members stationed on that checkpoint opened fire yesterday on a minibus parked in the area, injuring a girl.

Yesterday, SOHR sources reported an IED explosion in a car belonging to the “Counter-Narcotics Department”, while the car was patrolling in the neighbourhood of Al-Kashif in Daraa city. The explosion injured three members of the patrol and caused material damage. This incident came in light of the prevalent of drugs and narcotics in Daraa, as it is the case across the entire Syrian geography.

Since the beginning of the security chaos in Daraa in early June 2019, Syrian Observatory activists have documented more than 976 attacks and assassination attempts by gunfire and detonations of IEDs, motorcycle-bombs and car-bombs. These attacks and assassinations claimed the lives of 657 persons, categorised as follows:

  • 182 civilians, including 12 women and 18 children

  • 305 regime soldiers, loyalists and collaborators with regime security services

  • 119 fighters of factions that struck “reconciliation and settlements” deals with the regime and became in the ranks of regime’s security branches, including former commanders

  • 23 Syrian militiamen affiliated to the Lebanese Hezbollah and Iranian forces

  • 26 members of the so-called 5th Corps which was established by Russia.
