North Aleppo | Water company interrupts pumping drinking water to Azaz city

The pumping of drinking water from Maidanaki Lake in Afrin, north of Aleppo, which supplies the city of Azaz and its countryside in the areas controlled by “Euphrates Shield” operations room, have been suspended since morning.

According to SOHR sources, the suspension of pumping water comes as a result of non-payment of monthly fees to the Water Corporation of Azaz.

The process of interrupting the water came after a full month of providing Azaz area and its countryside with water supplies.

It is worth noting that the problem of securing drinking water in the cities under the control of the pro-Turkey factions, including the city of Azaz, is one of the most difficult problems in these areas due to the density of population and the increasing need for water daily. The local council had imposed a fee of an estimated 25 Turkish liras on each house per month.

Accordingly, some residents resort to underground water or through dealing with water trucks in order to securing drinking water, with prices reach 40 Turkish liras (about 15,000 SYL), despite the fact that tanks’ water is polluted, as well as the high rates of saline and sulfur in the groundwater.
