Daraa | Attempted assassination targets former faction leader who struck reconciliation with regime

On June 1, 2021
Daraa province: Syrian Observatory for Human Rights activists have reported an attempted assassination targeting a former leader of the factions in Daraa province. The man who once served as a former leader in Yarmouk army was among other leaders who struck “reconciliation and settlements” deals with the regime after controlling Daraa and became in the ranks of regime’s military security branches.
Meanwhile, an IED has exploded at the road between Om al-Mayadeen and al-Naimah in east of Daraa countryside while the former leader was passing. The explosion caused material losses without information have been reported about casualties.
It is worth noting that it is not the first time that the same leader has been targeted because he encountered a failed attempted assassination less than a year.
Since the beginning of the security chaos in Daraa in early June 2019, Syrian Observatory activists have documented more than 1,089 attacks and assassination attempts by gunfire and detonations of IEDs, motorcycle-bombs and car-bombs. These attacks and assassinations claimed the lives of 745 persons, categorised as follows:

• 208 civilians, including 13 women and 22 children

• 347 regime soldiers, loyalists and collaborators with regime security services

• 133 fighters of factions that struck “reconciliation and settlements” deals with the regime and became in the ranks of regime’s security branches, including former commanders

• 26 Syrian militiamen affiliated to the Lebanese Hezbollah and Iranian forces

• 31 members of the so-called 5th Corps which was established by Russia.
