Security chaos in Daraa | Assassination attempt targets Russian-backed militiaman, amid growing tension following confrontation with “State Security Service”

Daraa province: SOHR activists have reported that unknown armed men opened fire on a member of local factions working with the 8th Brigade of the Russian-backed 5th Corps backed by Russia in Barqa village near Inkhel city, north of Daraa, injuring him seriously. It is worth noting that the targeted man was a former fighter in opposition factions before striking a reconciliation deal in 2018.

On the other hand , SOHR monitored growing tension in Inkhel city and gunfire with light weapons after an attempt by “state security service” to arrest a civilian young man from the town, where the 5th Corps member prevented the security services from arresting the civilian.

Since the beginning of the security chaos in Daraa in early June 2019, Syrian Observatory activists have documented more than 1,096 attacks and assassination attempts by gunfire and detonations of IEDs, motorcycle-bombs and car-bombs. These attacks and assassinations claimed the lives of 750 persons, categorised as follows:

  • 209 civilians, including 13 women and 22 children

  • 350 regime soldiers, loyalists and collaborators with regime security services.

  • 134 fighters of factions that struck “reconciliation and settlements” deals with the regime and became in the ranks of regime’s security branches, including former commanders.

  • 26 Syrian militiamen affiliated to the Lebanese Hezbollah and Iranian forces.

  • 31 members of the so-called 5th Corps which was established by Russia.
