ISIS resurgence | Senior commander among six members of 4th Division killed in ambush in Hama desert

SOHR activists have documented the death of a Brigadier General and five other members of the 4th Division, headed by Maher al-Assad who is the brother of the Syrian regime’s president, in an ambush by ISIS members, which targeted a group of the 4th Division and regime forces in al-Bal’aas area in Hama desert. The attack also left 11 others injured and damaged several vehicles.

 

It is worth noting the Brigadier General was a senior commander of the 4th Division and the head of Kuwayris airbase. The commander had also led military battles in the western countryside and known for committing massacres and war crimes.

 

Since 24th of March 2019, SOHR has documented the killing of at least 1,570 regime soldiers and loyalists of Syrian and non-Syrian nationalities, including at least three Russians, and 153 Iranian-backed militiamen of non-Syrian nationalities. All were killed in attacks, bombings and ambushes by the “Islamic State”, west of Euphrates in the deserts of Deir Ezzor, al-Raqqah, Homs, al-Suwaidaa, Hama and Aleppo.

 

Also, four civilians working in gas fields, tens of shepherds and other civilians were killed and documented by SOHR in the same period, from late March 2019 until today. They were killed in attacks by ISIS cells. While 1,059 ISIS members were also killed in attacks and bombardment in the same period.
