Testimonies to SOHR in regime-held areas | Heating materials on rise compared to families purchase capabilities
Markets in most of the Syrian province that are stationed under control of the regime forces like Damascus, Aleppo and Hama have witnessed acute rise in the warming material prices the coincided with the coming of the inters and the deterioration of the living and economic conditions which have caused difficulty and severe suffering s of the civilians because they couldn’t bear the prices and the fuel prices.
The SOHR has documented the average prices of the heating materials with Syrian Lira in the areas under control of the Syrian regime that are categorized as:
• Ton of fire wood: 600,000 SL
• Firewood heaters: 400,000 SL
• Electricity heaters: 300,000 SL
• Gas heaters: 200,000 SL
It is worth noting that each family needs two tons of firewood for heating during the winter with an average cost of 1.2 million SL.
SOHR activists have monitored state of popular rage among the civilians in the provinces stationed under control of the regime forces due to the negligence of the regime government for subsidizing the diesel and provide it with suitable prices for the civilians, and also the hiking prices of the heating alternative materials like firewood, gas and electricity heaters that overprices most of the civilians purchase capabilities.
Due to the hiking prices of the diesel and its monopoly by merchants and not subsidizing it by the government, many families have tended to use other means of heating that are fewer prices amid lack of job opportunities and collapse of the Syrian lira against the US dollar.
Though winter is on doors and people started to prepare and buy the heating materials, “A.SH.” a 43-year-old male couldn’t buy from Hama city firewood, diesel or even a heater due to their hiking prices.
He told SOHR that he used to buy diesel for warming and that he was able to store above400 liter to use it in the winter, but in the past few years, he started to buy the firewood because its less costly and remains longer in the heater.
He added that one ton of the firewood is valued at 600,000 SL in Hama city, noting that the exported heater prices are hiking which imposed heavy burdens on the families who couldn’t afford the costs especially those without fixed income or who are aided by their families abroad.
“A.SH.” referred to state of popular discontent over the hiking prices of the heating materials in general and not finding solutions or subsidizing the diesel or give sufficient quantitates for the families with cheaper prices.
“H need above a million a half million SL which is very big amount because I don’t have fixed income source, “he added.
Meanwhile, “A.H.” from Daraa city told SOHR that the high prices of the fuel in general has pushed most of the families to depend on the alternative heating materials that have been also exceeded the purchase power of the civilians.
He said, “one liter of diesel in Daraa city is valued at 3,700 SL and could reach 500 SL with paying via the smart card. The card provides low quantities that couldn’t meet demands of needs of his family.”
He pointed out that his family now prefers to buy firewood for heating in the winter noting that one ton firewood reached more than 500,000 SL but these prices are not applied in Damascus and al-Suwaidaa.
On July, 10, the regime government has raised prices of one liter of diesel for all the public and private sectors to 500 SL, but the allocations of the subsidized diesel cover 100 liter for a family with isn’t enough for one month in the winter.
Civilians who live in the regime-held areas are suffering deteriorating conditions due to the hiking prices and decline of the wages level and the regime incapability to improve the living conditions.
