Destroyed by ISIS | Social Affairs Committee rehabilitates “al-Shuhadaa” Church in al-Raqqah

Social Affairs Committee in the Autonomous Administration area has accomplished the rehabilitiation and restoration work at the “Catholic Armani Martyrs Church” (al-Shuhadaa) in al-Raqqa city, the former capital of the “Caliphate State”. The church’s components had been destroyed by ISIS during their control of the city and turned it into an police station.

In early March 2013, opposition factions and Jabhat al-Nusra captured al-Raqqa city that became the first capital of a Syrian province go outside the control of regime forces at that time. Then violent battles erupted in the beginning of January 2014 between the opposition factions and Jabhat al-Nusra on one hand, and ISIS on one hand, before ISIS imposed its control on the entire city in the middle of January in the same year. Finally, SDF managed to capture the city in October 2017, with International Coalition Forces support.
