Peace Spring area | Turkish intelligence and proxy factions conduct security operation against International Coalition-backed groups

SOHR activists have reported that the Russian intelligence has conducted security operation in the Turkish forces-held areas in the Peace Spring region in north a-Raqqa countryside and inside the adjunct Turkish territories.

According to sources, the operation targeted groups that send intelligence to the International Coalition, some of which are belonging to the Turkish proxy factions.

The Turkish intelligence services have arrested several elements of the groups after violent clashes took place in Silouk town in al-Raqqa countryside and took them to unknown destination.

On July 28, the United States Treasury Department sanctioned several individuals and entities, including Ahrar al-Sharqiyyah group and two of its commanders, they were Ahmed Ihsan Fayyad al-Hayis, known as “Abu Hatem Shaqraa”, and Ra’ed Jasim al-Hayis, known as “Abu Jaafar Shaqraa”, over serious violations against human rights, including the kidnapping, torturing and killing the Kurdish female politician Hevrin Khalaf in October 2019. It is worth noting that the group’s members are also responsible for looting civilians’ properties and preventing Syrian displaced civilians from returning their homes.

These sanctions came as a part of the US efforts to prosecute “criminals” involved into human rights abuses in Syria and hold them accountable.
